Physical Education and School Sport at New English School (Secondary)
What is Physical Education?
Physical education at NES focuses on developing students' physical abilities, empowering them to participate confidently in a wide range of activities. Beyond improving motor skills, it plays a crucial role in supporting mental, social, emotional, and cognitive development, and promoting overall well-being. For example, students learn to manage stress through exercise, build social skills through team sports, and improve cognitive function through strategic gameplay.
The Importance of Physical Education in Schools
A high-quality physical education curriculum enables all students to enjoy and excel in diverse physical activities. It helps them develop a broad range of skills, alongside the ability to apply tactics, strategies, and creative ideas to enhance performance. Students are encouraged to think critically, assess situations, and make independent decisions while participating. They reflect on performances and identify ways to provide help and support. This process builds their confidence, leadership skills and promotes active participation, to deepen their understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle for both body and mind.

Students are taught the importance of effort, composure, and resilience, learning to persevere and overcome challenges. They take on various roles, including leadership, coaching, and officiating, while developing teamwork and the importance of helping and supporting others. Sports Day & Interhouse Competitions
Sports Day is one of the NES calendar's most exciting and eagerly anticipated events. It brings together students, staff, and families to celebrate teamwork, determination, and school spirit. The day is filled with a variety of athletic events, providing every student with the opportunity to participate, compete, and have fun. From traditional track races to field events such as the long jump and javelin, Sports Day encourages friendly competition while promoting physical fitness and teamwork. In addition to the competitive events, students enjoy fun activities such as the ever-popular tug-of-war and micro relay, adding an extra layer of excitement and inclusivity to the day. The event encourages a sense of camaraderie, with students earning points for their house teams, cheering each other on, and showcasing positive sportsmanship throughout the day. Sports Day is not only a celebration of athletic achievement but also an opportunity for students to build confidence, resilience, and a lasting love for sport.
Starting in the 2025/2026 school year, NES is excited to introduce Basketball Interhouse competitions for all year groups. This new addition will further our commitment to providing diverse sporting opportunities for students. It aims to encourage participation across all ages and promote teamwork, healthy competition, and school spirit.
Competitive Sports Participation
Through our collaboration with ISACK (International Schools Athletic Conference of Kuwait), our students engage in weekly local fixtures as part of a wider league, culminating in end-of-season tournaments. Each term, students can choose from a variety of seasonal sports such as football, basketball, swimming, table tennis, netball (girls only), and volleyball, sparking their passion while enhancing motor skills, coordination, and teamwork. Matches take place at designated venues or follow the traditional home and away format, providing valuable opportunities to experience competitive play.
NES is also proud to be a member of BSME (British Schools in the Middle East), and our students participate in the prestigious BSME Games, one of the leading school sports competitions globally. This exclusive event gives students the chance to compete against schools across the Middle East in athletics, football, netball, and volleyball (U15, U13). There are also opportunities for individual participation in sports such as golf and swimming, allowing students to showcase their talents in a range of disciplines.
