Charitable events

As part of the Personal, Social Development Programme in the curriculum, pupils are made aware of communities less fortunate than themselves. This spurred the children of year 6 into action and they decided to support the Water Aid Charity, which helps to provide fresh clean drinking water to communities which have none. This cause was soon taken up by every year group in the Junior School, each organising their own activity in support of the project.

The Junior Department of the Primary School began collecting for WaterAid after Year 6 watched a BBC video on water as part of their ‘Water’ topic. The children were later shown the WaterAid video ‘Water for Life’ about the lack of access to safe clean drinking water suffered by the world’s poorest people.

The children began their charity drive by collecting coins in small water bottles. Cake sales, sponsored spellings and a sponsored walk raised more money. Some children sold books and other personal effects, groups of children made fruit salads which they sold to teachers, while some popped their pocket money into the collection bottles. WaterAid badges were made and each one was numbered; we used these as entries for a raffle.

A ‘Dress as you Please’ day raised more money and the term ended with a fun Sports Day with water-related races. The children raised 4000KD (almost £8000).

The children’s efforts were recognised in an article in the current WaterAid Fundraising Magazine and were also featured in the latest ECIS magazine.
