What We Do
Early Years (KG and Reception)

Our approach in Kindergarten and Reception is a developmental one that fosters cognitive, creative, social, emotional and physical growth in young children. We encourage children to experience the joys of learning and discovery as well as the spontaneous delights of childhood in a secure environment. We believe that early development of basic skills provides a sound foundation for future learning capabilities. Our curriculum is based on the UK Foundation Stage guidelines. (1)

In addition to class based lessons the Foundation Stage children also experience some specialist lessons:
  • Music lessons twice a week with a music specialist. They are introduced to musical language and rhythm through song and playing percussion instruments.

  • Library visits once a week where the children are taught how to look after, appreciate and enjoy books.

  • P.E. (Physical Education) each week, in indoor facilities, taken by a P.E. specialist. The lessons focus on developing children’s physical control, awareness of space and the ability to handle a range of equipment effectively.

  • I.T. Lessons (Reception classes only) in the Computer Suite each week. In addition to this there is a computer in each classroom.

  • There is an Arabic lesson each day (for KG one lesson each week) and it is taught by specialist Arabic teachers. The children are encouraged to talk in Arabic and they learn the basics of reading and writing.

  • In Reception Muslim children attend Islamic classes once a week. Non-Muslim children leave the classroom and are taught by another teacher.
As is the case with many good schools we have various events throughout the year that the parents may be involved in. These include:
  • Sports Day
  • The annual Kindergarten Concert
  • Reception class assemblies
  • Maths Week
  • Book Fairs and a Book Week.
  • Science Week
  • Celebrations relating to National or International themes.
  • Class trips within the local area

The school day is:
Kindergarten 8:00am – 12:45pm
Reception 8:00am – 2:00pm

Key Stage 1

In Year 1 and 2 the children start to build on the skills, understanding and knowledge that they have acquired in Reception and KG. They continue to develop independence in both thinking and personal organisation. By the end of Year 2 the basic skills acquired in the Infant Department are consolidated and built upon in preparation for the transition into the Juniors (Key Stage 2).
In Key Stage 1 we follow the National Curriculum of England and Wales. (1)
We use the THRASS (2) approach to teaching phonics and spelling throughout the Infant school.

In addition to class based lessons the children also experience some specialist lessons:
  • Music lessons twice a week with a music specialist. They are given a basic understanding of musical language and rhythm through song and playing percussion instruments.

  • Two lessons of P.E. (Physical Education) each week, in indoor facilities, taken by a P.E. specialist. The lessons focus on developing children’s physical control, awareness of space and the ability to handle a range of equipment effectively.

  • I.T. Lessons in the Computer Suite each week. In addition to this there is a computer in each classroom.

  • Library visits once a week where children can borrow books to take home. During this time children are taught how to look after, appreciate and enjoy books.

  • There are eight Arabic lessons every week and they are taught by specialist Arabic teachers. The lessons follow the curriculum laid down by the Ministry of Education in Kuwait.

  • There are two Islamic lessons and one Quran lesson taught each week to Muslim children. Non-Muslim children do not attend these lessons.

In Year 2 children have the opportunity to attend a variety of after school clubs that include sport, art and craft, music and computer activities.
